‘Food is not just eating energy’. ‘It’s an experience’

Landing to a new destination is itself an amazing experience for any student which involves ambiguous feelings like excitement and anxiety. Though, Latvia is one of the welcoming countries for international students but students from different parts of the world usually take some time to adjust.

European Countries are known for their incredible food variety and scrumptious taste. Riga has the largest central market of Europe which has fresh and natural products from Latvian farms. Apart from the food, Central Market is also admired for pavilion architecture and the vibrant market atmosphere. Talking about the food in Latvia, then there are endless dishes and places to try delightful food in Latvia.

Let’s begin with RYE BREAD

You can’t even imagine the worth of this bread for Latvians. May be as a student In Latvia, you would also start admiring this ‘Rye Bread’. It is believed that a typical Latvian consumes 50kg of Rye bread per year. This is a kind of universal dish with every second dish in Latvia. People in Latvia love to eat almost every dish with this bread and enjoy their meals to the fullest.

Potatoes & Cheese

Unlike other countries, Latvians are fond of potatoes and consumes this as a substantial ingredient in their dishes. Although, they use potatoes innovatively according to the weathers such as they eat potatoes pan fried and in a creamy form. Another, major liking of Latvians is cheese. They have huge variety of Latvian cheese beginning from basic to herbs, fermented and etc. They enjoy naturally and fresh made cheese with breads, potatoes and even with pancakes.

Grey peas with speck

Latvians most favorite snack is Grey peas with speck. Along with the national dish, this is very close to the heart of Latvians as they consider this dish as lucky and usually serves on Christmas Eve as a tradition. This is also cooked in different ways which is one of the favorite dish of Latvian locals.

Kvass

One of the most favored and popular beverage of Baltic region is Kvass. This is a low-alcoholic drink which is combination of fresh fruits, raisins, mint and fermented black rye bread that gives distinct and interesting flavor to this drink. This could be easily found in the streets of Latvia and majorly capture people in warm months as it is a kind of refreshment for Latvian people.

Smoked fish

Riga is famous for the variety of scrumptious fishes which is cooked and served in different patterns. You will get to taste exceptional flavor of fishes as Latvians have unusual way of cooking. Some of the fishes which are part of Latvian cuisine are cod, pike, eel, Liepajas menciņš and many more.
